Death and the Dark Goddesses

To live life, we must first conquer death and understand that there is no death in life.

Death is central to some of my work. I am a certified Death Doula and I have helped many women suffering from the trauma of birth loss. Birth Doula’s are more commonly called on to assist women during labour.

But a Death Doula, such as myself, acts as an ally to any person that is terminally ill who requires emotional support - especially when dealing with family and friends who are emotionally pulling them. We help them get their documents and their final wishes in order. As a priest, I am empowered to provide blessings and rites to assist their transition. I can also provide spiritual support with prayer and remove anguish through comfort, be it vocal or silent.

Those familiar with this process have warned me that this is very dangerous work. Yet, I have seen that Mother is both life and death.

I have travelled to many places but it was in the United States that I found Lady Death, similar to our own Tara Devi. Both meet us at the point of death, to guide us in remembering that we are Divine beings. For me, Death is also Mother, who enlightens us to the ultimate truth of this life - that is it temporary. There is no immortality, only a place between life and death which is a void.

I met this Mother Death when I fell into a coma. I had an enlightening experience through death that taught me the truth of life. I felt that everyone was One and only without limitation. Knowing this, won’t it make life better to know that all is given and cared for? That Mother is our mother for this very reason, in all Her forms?

To put it simply, I learnt a strong lesson: Do not fear life, and do not fear death because Mother is in both.
